Testing: In-person vs. Virtual

In-Person vs. Virtual USFS Testing: Which Is Right for Your Skater?

As skaters progress through the U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) test system, one common question comes up for skaters and families alike:

Should we test in person or virtually?

With both options now widely available, choosing the right testing format is less about “right vs. wrong” and more about what best supports a skater’s development, mindset, and confidence.

At Skate VIDA, we work closely with skaters to help them decide when — and how — to test so the experience is productive, empowering, and aligned with long-term goals.

Understanding the Two Testing Options

In-Person USFS Testing

In-person testing takes place at an official USFS test session, usually hosted by a local figure skating club.

What it looks like:

  • Skaters warm up with others testing at the same level

  • A traditional panel of one to three judges evaluates the test live

  • Judges individually score the test. Those scores determine if the test is a Pass or Retry.

  • In a multi-judge panel, if the scores do not align, the majority determines the outcome.

  • No rankings, no placements — only judge whether the standard is met, unmet or in come cases exceeded (Honors or Distinction).

Virtual USFS Testing

Virtual testing allows skaters to submit a single-shot, unedited video of their test for review by a judging panel.

What it looks like:

  • The test is recorded in one continuous take following USFS guidelines

    • Out-of-Club test permission, affidavits and likeness release documents must be submitted along with the recording

    • A videographer and proctor are required

  • The video is submitted online to a panel of judges

  • Judges apply the same standards as in-person testing

Pros and Cons of In-Person Testing

✅ Pros

  • Real-time performance experience — excellent preparation for competitions and showcases

  • Clear start-and-finish structure helps skaters learn to manage nerves

  • Immediate sense of accomplishment when the test is complete

  • For early tests (such as Pre-Preliminary and Preliminary, which often use a one-judge panel), it can feel less intimidating than expected

⚠️ Cons

  • One chance to perform — no do-overs

  • Can increase anxiety for skaters who struggle with nerves

  • Less control over environment (ice conditions, session timing, audience)

Pros and Cons of Virtual Testing

✅ Pros

  • Ability to test in a familiar environment

  • Flexibility in scheduling

  • Reduced pressure for skaters who experience strong test-day anxiety

  • Helpful for skaters balancing school, travel, or busy schedules

⚠️ Cons

  • The ability to re-record can create overthinking or perfectionism

  • Some skaters struggle to feel “finished” and confident submitting a video

  • Less practice performing under real-time pressure

  • Requires strong self-discipline and coach guidance to avoid endless retakes

Which Is Right for You?

There is no universal answer — and that’s okay.

Instead, we encourage skaters to reflect on how pressure affects their performance:

  • Does skating in front of a live judging panel energize you and bring out your best skating?

  • Or does it create anxiety that interferes with skills you can normally perform well?

  • Does the option to re-record a virtual test help you feel prepared — or does it lead to frustration and never feeling “good enough”?

For many skaters, especially at the Pre-Preliminary and Preliminary levels, in-person testing can be a valuable learning experience that builds confidence early on. Others thrive with virtual testing and gain confidence by easing into the testing process.

Both pathways are valid — what matters most is choosing the format that supports healthy progress and a positive relationship with testing.

How Skate VIDA Helps You Decide

At Skate VIDA, testing is never a one-size-fits-all decision. Our coaches consider:

  • Skill consistency and readiness

  • Mental preparedness and confidence

  • Age, experience level, and goals

  • How a skater responds to pressure

We help skaters decide when to test, which format to choose, and how to prepare — so testing becomes a milestone to celebrate, not something to fear.
