S.M.A.R.T. Goal-Setting
Goal setting is one of the most powerful tools athletes can use to improve performance, stay motivated, and measure progress over time. Decades of research in sport psychology show that athletes who set clear, specific goals consistently outperform those who do not. The key, however, is not just setting any goal—it’s setting goals that are ambitious enough to inspire growth, yet achievable enough to build confidence and momentum.
One widely supported framework is setting SMART goals:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time-bound
In figure skating, this might look like shifting from a vague goal such as “get better spins” to something more concrete, like “hold a centered camel spin for six revolutions by the end of the month” or “land five clean axels in practice by March.” Research also shows that breaking large outcome goals—such as passing a U.S. Figure Skating test or preparing for a local competition—into smaller process goals helps skaters stay focused and reduces performance anxiety.
Ambitious goals matter because they push skaters beyond their comfort zones, but they must be paired with realism. Studies indicate that goals perceived as attainable increase motivation and persistence, while goals that feel overwhelming can lead to burnout or disengagement. This balance is especially important in figure skating, where progress happens over time and setbacks are part of the journey. Setting short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals allows skaters to recognize growth at every stage—whether they are just starting lessons or training at a competitive level here in our Central Texas skating community.
At Skate VIDA, our figure skating academy is proud to support skaters across Austin, Cedar Park, Round Rock, and the surrounding areas by helping them develop strong habits both on and off the ice. As part of our Skate Into 2026 Goal Setting Challenge, we encourage every skater to take the next step: fill out a goal-setting sheet and post it on the Skate VIDA Goal Wall. Seeing goals written down—and displayed alongside teammates—creates accountability, builds community, and reminds us why we step onto the ice each day.
Stop by the rink this week, complete your goal-setting sheet, and add your goals to the wall. Let’s skate into 2026 with intention, motivation, and a shared commitment to growth—together at Skate VIDA.
