A Small Turn With a Big Technical Challenge

Welcome to Technical Corner, a Skate VIDA series breaking down the skills that make up a figure skater's technical foundation. Each month, we'll take one element—from jumps and spins to turns and skating skills—and look beyond simply what the skill looks like to understand how it works, why it matters, and what skaters can do to improve it.

This month, we're looking at a turn that is small enough to overlook but technically demanding enough to expose weaknesses in a skater's edge control: the bracket turn.

What Is a Bracket Turn?

A bracket is a one-foot turn in which the skater changes direction while remaining on the same edge, with the rotation of the body occurring in the opposite direction from the curve of the edge.

That might sound complicated, but the basic idea is fairly simple.

A bracket is performed on one foot, and unlike a three-turn, the skater does not change edges during the turn.

Think of it this way:

Three-turn: Same foot, edge changes.

Bracket: Same foot, same edge.

The bracket gets its name from the shape of the tracing left on the ice. As the skater enters on a curve, rotates, and exits while maintaining the same edge, the tracing resembles a bracket.

Brackets can be performed on different edges and in different rotational directions, which means skaters will encounter four variations as they progress: Forward Outside (FO), Forward Inside (FI), Backward Outside (BO), and Backward Inside (BI)

At first, the goal may simply be to understand the movement and complete the turn. As skaters advance, the focus shifts toward making the bracket clean, controlled, and powerful.

And that's where this deceptively small turn gets interesting.

Why Does the Bracket Matter?

The bracket isn't necessarily the kind of element that gets the biggest reaction from an audience.

You're probably not going to hear the crowd roar when a skater executes a beautiful bracket.

But technically, it is an incredibly useful skill.

Brackets develop several qualities that show up throughout figure skating.

Edge Control

The skater has to maintain the intended edge throughout the turn rather than allowing the blade to flatten or change edges.

Rotational Control

The body has to rotate while the blade continues to travel along the intended curve. That requires coordination between the upper body, hips, skating knee, and blade.

Balance

Because the entire turn happens on one foot, there is very little room to hide a balance problem.

Precision

A good bracket has a recognizable entry, turn, and exit. It isn't simply "turning around."

Skating Quality

Brackets are one of those skills where you can really see the difference between doing the movement and actually skating the movement.

And that distinction matters.

Strong skating isn't simply about being able to complete a list of elements. It's about how those elements are executed—the quality of the edges, the control of the blade, the flow across the ice, and the skater's ability to move with purpose.

Key Mechanics of a Bracket Turn

A bracket may only take a moment to execute, but there are several things happening at once.

Understanding those mechanics can make the turn much easier to learn.

1. Start With the Edge

A bracket begins with a controlled edge rather than a flat blade.

The skater needs enough knee bend and edge pressure to establish the curve before initiating the turn.

If the entry edge isn't secure, the skater has very little chance of maintaining control through the rest of the movement.

This is one reason strong edge work is so important before learning more complicated turns.

2. The Body Rotates Against the Curve

This is one of the defining characteristics of the bracket.

The body begins rotating in the direction opposite the curve of the edge, creating the distinctive bracket action.

For developing skaters, this can feel unusual at first. It's tempting to think of the turn simply as rotating the body in the direction you want to go.

Instead, the skater needs to coordinate the rotation of the body with the path of the blade.

This is where good coaching can make a significant difference. A skater can often feel like they're doing the correct movement while the blade is actually telling a different story.

3. Stay on One Foot

A bracket is a one-foot turn.

The skating foot stays on the ice throughout the movement, meaning the skater has to manage the entry, rotation, and exit without using the other foot to catch or rescue the turn.

This is one reason the turn can expose balance problems so quickly.

If a skater isn't comfortable controlling their edge on one foot, the bracket will usually make that very clear.

4. Maintain the Edge Through the Turn

This is the tricky part.

The blade should continue to hold the intended edge rather than flattening out during the rotation.

If the edge disappears, the turn may still look like a bracket to a casual observer, but the skater has lost much of the technical quality that makes the movement valuable.

Learning to feel the edge under the blade is a major part of developing good skating skills.

5. Finish the Exit

A bracket isn't finished when the blade changes direction.

The exit matters.

The skater should come out of the turn with control and continue gliding rather than immediately stepping down or losing the edge.

A beautiful entry followed by a weak or unstable exit isn't a complete skating skill.

In fact, coaches will often have skaters practice the entry and exit separately before putting the entire turn together.

The goal is to make the movement feel connected rather than like a series of isolated actions.

Common Bracket Turn Mistakes

Brackets are deceptively technical, which means small mistakes can have a big effect on the quality of the turn.

Here are some of the most common issues skaters encounter when learning them.

"Turning" Instead of Bracketing

One of the most common problems is that the skater understands that they need to rotate but doesn't understand what the blade is supposed to be doing.

The result is a turn that looks approximately correct but doesn't maintain the proper edge relationship.

The skater has turned—but they haven't actually performed the turn with the intended mechanics.

Flattening the Edge

A skater may begin on the correct edge but flatten the blade during the rotation.

This often happens because the skater is trying to make the turn easier.

Unfortunately, flattening the blade removes some of the very edge control the bracket is designed to develop.

Throwing the Upper Body

A skater who doesn't yet have control of the turn may try to generate rotation by aggressively twisting their shoulders.

That can create a quick-looking turn, but it usually sacrifices control and makes the exit much more difficult.

The rotation should come from coordinated movement of the entire skating side of the body rather than simply throwing the shoulders around.

Standing Too Tall

Like so many skating skills, knee bend matters.

A skater who straightens the skating knee before or during the turn often loses the stability needed to maintain the edge.

Staying athletic through the skating knee gives the skater a much stronger platform from which to control the turn.

Rushing the Turn

Skaters sometimes try to make the bracket happen as quickly as possible.

But a controlled bracket doesn't need to be rushed.

Learning to feel the edge, coordinate the rotation, and control the exit is more important than simply completing the turn as quickly as possible.

Speed can be developed later.

First, learn to own the movement.

Where Do Brackets Fit Into Figure Skating Progression?

A beginning skater might encounter the bracket simply as one more turn to learn.

But as skating progresses, brackets become part of a much bigger picture.

They're used in Moves in the Field, step sequences, skating skills exercises, and higher-level footwork, and they contribute to the overall quality of a skater's edge work.

For competitive skaters, strong turns can also make step sequences look more intentional and controlled.

And for advanced skaters, the question becomes less:

"Can I do a bracket?"

and more:

"Can I do a bracket with speed, flow, clean edges, control, and musical purpose?"

That's a much higher standard.

It also illustrates an important point about skating skills:

A skill doesn't stop developing just because you've learned it.

The same bracket that was once simply something you were trying to complete can eventually become something you refine for quality.

You can work on making it cleaner.

Then faster.

Then more controlled.

Then more powerful.

Eventually, you can incorporate it into increasingly complex footwork while maintaining speed and flow.

That progression is one of the most rewarding parts of developing skating skills.

How We Teach the Bracket at Skate VIDA

The goal isn't just to check "bracket" off a list.

It's to make the bracket a useful part of the skater's overall skating.

The Bigger Lesson Behind the Bracket

One of the reasons we like turns such as the bracket is that they remind skaters that figure skating is built from much more than jumps.

Jumps may be some of the most visible skills in the sport, but every jump, spin, and program is supported by the quality of the skating underneath it.

  • Edges.

  • Turns.

  • Balance.

  • Knee bend.

  • Body control.

  • Speed.

  • Flow.

Those foundational skills don't disappear as a skater progresses. They become more important.

A skater with strong skating skills has more tools available to them. They can enter elements with greater control, move more efficiently across the ice, connect choreography more naturally, and execute footwork with greater confidence.

The bracket is just one small piece of that larger foundation.

But sometimes the smallest skills teach us the biggest lessons.
